The Challenge

UK-based Counter Solutions has been creating ePOS (electronic point of sale), cashless campus, and customer engagement solutions for hospitality customers since 1989. One of the ISVs newest and most exciting opportunities is addressing the needs of micro-markets — self-service kiosks or small stores, often on commercial campuses, that provide a convenient way to provide meals and snacks to patrons 24/7. As an alternative to traditional vending, micro-markets provide customers expanded food offerings that include traditional grab-and-go snacks and meals, as well as a range of healthy alternatives.

Recently, Counter Solutions was approached by Sodexo, the world’s largest services company, and customer GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) to create a micro-market solution for the UK-based pharmaceutical company. Nigel Bryant, global lead, Sodexo at GSK explained that the goal of the new micro-market at GSK was to provide GSK employees with a variety of great food, 24/7, while making the self-checkout process easy and cash-free.

Because micro-markets typically run without dedicated staff, having reliable easy-to-use technology was critical.

How NMI Helped

Counter Solutions pulled together a best-of-breed solution to address the needs of the new micro-market. Called Way2Pay Go!, the micro-market ePOS solution includes hardware from Diebold Nixdorf and relies on NMI's payment gateway to handle payments.

NMI provided Counter Solutions with its ChipDNA SDK for Windows to allow them to integrate with NMI's payment gateway. Once integrated, payments made at the device are routed to the acquiring bank for processing. Because payment options were important to GSK, the solution can accept credit and debit cards, both Apple and Android Pay, the cashless cards used by GSK employees, and contactless NFC payments.

How it works

Day or night, GSK employees looking for a full meal or snack can shop the micro-market at their convenience. Once choices are made, the customers use the self-checkout device to scan their items. When all items are scanned, customers are presented with their payment options.

All payments are secured and protected to the highest standards set by the PCI Security Standards Council, EMVCo, and the card brands. When cards are processed, NMI encrypts the card data at the point of entry and de-crypt it securely within their own PCI level 1 infrastructure. No card data is stored in or touched by the micro-market solution, protecting everyone involved.

The companies have been long-standing partners, collaborating on e-commerce solutions since 2006. The results

The new micro-market at GSK was immediately successful and well-received upon launch. GSK employees now have access to a variety of food and healthy choices at any time of day. The micro-market has proven to be so efficient a model, it’s able to address six times the customers than the previous model.
