Global rise in EMV and NFC push contactless EMV Kernel demand
Payment terminal manufacturers can widen global hardware usage with Creditcall’s contactless EMV Kernels enabling payments for American Express, Discover, Mastercard, UnionPay International, and Visa cards.
Bristol, 7 September 2017 – Omni-channel payment gateway and EMV Kernel provider, Creditcall, has expanded its contactless EMV Level 2 Kernel offering to include Discover and UnionPay International. Manufacturers of payment devices looking to source EMV Level 2 Kernels from a third party that address contactless EMV payments can now ensure their payment devices can be used universally across developed and emerging EMV countries. Creditcall’s offering also addresses other payment enablers such as EFTPOS.
A Level 2 Kernel is a software library which handles the logic and processing for EMV chip card transactions, regulated by EMVCo, the trade body behind EMV controlled equally by American Express, China UnionPay, Discover, JCB, Mastercard and Visa. Contactless Kernels are specified by each card brand individually.
In addition to these new Discover and UnionPay International Kernels, Creditcall has Kernels for American Express, Mastercard, and Visa. By leveraging Creditcall’s contactless EMV Level 2 Kernels, payment device manufacturers can solve the challenges associated with EMV contact and contactless payments, and position themselves for the explosive growth and interest in such payment types being experienced worldwide.
EMV Adoption Skyrockets
EMVCo, reported in 2017 that 52.4 percent of all card-present transactions conducted globally between January and December 2016 used EMV chip card technology, up from 35.8 percent for the same period in 2015.* The US has seen the biggest growth of almost 100 percent with an EMV chip card adoption rate of 52.2 percent, compared to 26.4 percent in 2015, the year of the liability shift. Europe remains in the lead with an adoption rate of 84.9 percent while Asia has the biggest growth potential with an adoption rate of 38.8 percent.
The Rise of Contactless Payments
Additionally, due to its ease of use and speed, contactless payments have gained in popularity. In the UK alone, card payments have overtaken cash payments now accounting for more than 50 percent of all retail purchases, of which 30 percent were contactless.
