The Royal British Legion has partnered with Lloyds Bank Cardnet to go contactless to adapt to changing consumer payment behaviour
Bristol, 2 November 2017 - Creditcall’s payment gateway and contactless EMV Level 2 Kernel were used to enable over 200 contactless terminals, provided by manufacturer Payter, during the 2017 Poppy Appeal, the Legion’s annual appeal which raises money to support Armed Forces personnel, veterans, and their families.
The Royal British Legion, in partnership with Lloyds Bank Cardnet, is piloting the scheme across the UK. During this year’s Poppy Appeal the British public can donate by using their contactless cards, smart devices, and wearables in addition to cash.
The contactless terminals, featuring the familiar poppy design, will have three pre-set donation levels of £2, £3, and £5 enabling donors to conveniently, quickly and securely make their donation.
“This partnership is another great step in making it simpler for the brilliant British public to support our Armed Forces community. It’s vitally important that we continue to adapt to changing consumer behaviour and make it as easy as we can for the public to donate for a poppy.” – Simon O’Leary, Assistant Director, Community and Mass Events, The Royal British Legion.
Further benefits of contactless donations:
- Greater insight into donation data via online reporting
- Charities get fast settlement directly to their bank
- Charity workers do not need to deposit cash at the bank
- Reduced risks to volunteers as no need to handle or store cash
- Highly convenient for donors – no need to rummage for coins
“We are honoured to provide our contactless payment technology to enable a new way to donate to The Royal British Legion and the famous Poppy Appeal” – Jeremy Gumbley, CTO of Creditcall.
“Contactless has revolutionised how consumers pay for goods and services, and with fewer and fewer people carrying cash, using these contactless terminals should lead to more donations this year’s Poppy Appeal” said Lloyds Bank Cardnet MD Tony Nash. “Creditcall have worked closely with Cardnet throughout the development process and provided an effective solution to help us run this large scale pilot for The Royal British Legion. I hope our combined efforts will lead to a hugely successful 2017 Appeal.”

“We are honoured to provide our contactless payment technology to enable a new way to donate to The Royal British Legion and the famous Poppy Appeal” said Jeremy Gumbley, CTO of Creditcall. “Poppy donations can now be made easily using contactless cards as an alternative to cash. We wish The Royal British Legion every success in their great work supporting the Armed Forces community both now and in the years to come.”
Contactless card usage has rapidly increased since its introduction in 2007. In 2017, contactless spending in the UK is likely to double compared to 2016. Already £23.23bn have been spent in the first six months of 2017, compared to £25bn for the entire year of 2016.
In 2016, 45 million poppies were distributed, raising over £47.6 million for the Legion’s vital work. This year’s appeal launched on 26 October 2017.
