Bristol, UK, September 23, 2019 —
NMI, the unified commerce enablement company, has partnered with Flowbird to deliver the first PCI P2PE certified contactless ticketing solution, live on buses in the Edinburgh area since July.

Highly visible Contactless readers allow bus passengers to pay as they board, by tapping either their Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards or their phone with Apple Pay or Google Pay.

The system is unique because unlike most other Contactless ticketing systems, the sensitive card information is guaranteed encrypted within the actual reader and is not decrypted until it is safely within the NMI secure payments environment. Furthermore, the Point-to-Point Encryption is independently assessed and certified by the PCI Security Standards Council. Every reader is rigorously tracked through manufacture, key injection, distribution, and installation. All aspects of the solution are designed to guarantee that no cardholder data ever touches the systems of the bus operator or the ticketing system in an unencrypted form.

The benefit for bus operators is that a certified PCI P2PE solution dramatically simplifies its obligations in respect of compliance with PCI DSS, in some cases to the extent that a full security audit is replaced by a self-assessment questionnaire.

Our partnership with NMI ensures end-to-end encryption from the point of ‘tap’, through to the payments environment for Flowbird’s account based ticketing solution — Brian Carpenter, Sales & Marketing Director at Flowbird Transport Intelligence

Brian Carpenter, Sales and Marketing Director at Flowbird Transport Intelligence, commented: “Secure data processing is fundamental to building consumer confidence and accelerating the adoption of new payment methods. End to end security is a key consideration for transport operators looking to invest in open payments systems. Our partnership with NMI ensures end-to-end encryption from the point of ‘tap’, through to the payments environment for Flowbird’s account based ticketing solution.”

In these times when any sort of breach of sensitive card data can be catastrophic for the companies concerned, this PCI P2PE certification gives the best possible assurance to the operator and customers that their data is safe. — Liz Gibson, Product Manager for Transportation Services at NMI

NMI Product Manager for Transportation Services, Liz Gibson commented, “NMI is proud to have worked with Flowbird Transport Intelligence on another landmark transit project. In these times when any sort of breach of sensitive card data can be catastrophic for the companies concerned, this PCI P2PE certification gives the best possible assurance to the operator and customers that their data is safe.”
